Michael Durnham Expedition 2003
13 Scouts and two leaders, Anna and Alexey, came from St. Petersburg on 10th August for two weeks on their expedition to the UK.
After landing at London, Gatwick they were taken by minibus to Phasels Wood Scout Activity Centre by Doug, the Deputy Warden, where they welcomed by a local Scout Fellowship with a meal. During their six-day stay at Phasels they took part in the activities provided including Archery, Rifle Shooting, Climbing Wall and Canoeing. They visited St Albans and Cambridge, where they spent the day visiting the colleges and experienced punting on the river – with a few falling in just to cool off during the heat. Eileen Creak, the mother of Michael Durnan, was very pleased to have been able to spend the day with Scouts at Cambridge.
Robin Loudon then drove them to Coetmor Mill, a Hertfordshire Activity Centre in North Wales, where there were met by Maria Hearn, a qualified hill walking instructor, and Graham Hall and Beccy Grundy. There they spent 4 nights split between hill walking and sight seeing in glorious weather. They met Scouts from Wrexham who have a keen interest to visit Russia next year.
Then down to the Docklands Scout Project for a four-day London experience, with Legoland thrown in for good measure, before departing at the unearthly hour of 05.15 for the return trip from Gatwick back to St. Petersburg.
Our thanks go to all who helped to make the expedition such a success.
Note: Michael Durnan was a Scout Leader from Hertfordshire who lost his life in 1994, together with Gwenda Hollis, Australia, and Marsha Platinova, Russia, on the streets of St. Petersburg soon after the 1st Russian International Jamboree at Ladoga Lake. The expedition in the UK remembers with affection the three leaders.See the pictures.
